Originally built in 1909 by Charles Schafer, President of the American Fire Insurance Company, this grand building once stood as an icon of turn-of-the-century prosperity. Located in Washington, DC's historic Mount Pleasant neighborhood, this mansion is complete with a grandiose entrance hall staircase, intricate wood-paneled parlor and dining room, and billiard room with plaster walls frescoed with now-fading tales of this entrepreneurial family.
In recent years, this magnificent mansion, nominated as one of DC's Most Endangered Places, fell quietly into disrepair under the ravages of water damage and neglect. Time took its toll on the Flemish-bond building and adjacent carriage house while the building's magnificent hand-carved details were the verge of being lost.
With a vision towards its bustling streetcars and stately mansions of Mount Pleasant's past, Community Three has charted a path to stop this property's precipitous decay and return this once architectural gem to prominence.
Born of this endeavor is The Schafer, a bouquet of luxury residences that are carefully-crafted - each individually designed to take advantage of the building's one-of-a-kind architectural features. The restoration effort includes a complete renovation of the building's grand wrap-around porch, ornate hardwood staircase, and all eight wood-burning fireplaces. The Schafer ultimately pays tribute to the style and character of the early 1900's while creating efficient, comfortable, and elegant places to enjoy the best of city life.
